When we don’t teach, educate, or inform our teams or stakeholders that there are consequences from either actions we take hiring people who don’t represent our brand (or who don’t have the skill set or talent) or actions we don’t take (investing in our people/ being shortsighted with seizing opportunities/ or simply “being penny pound and dollar foolish”) on critical aspects of our business- the consequences are there and they continue to mount! What starts as a small “savings” soon grown into something larger and that is when people start to react.
Why? Why do we react at the nineteenth hour to “fix” something when we could have been “supporting” and teaching all along? It all just seems counterproductive and so short-sighted. The long term effect of fixing something after you haven’t supported it or invested in it- you will spend more money, time and energy over the long-term than if you had failed to handle issues upfront and in a timely manner.
